Pan’s Labyrinth

August 25th, 2007

Sadly I read the reviews before seeing this masterpiece. Even though overwhelmingly positive, in them this movie is compared to Middle Earth and Narnia. This movie however is more about the real world and the magic of the innocence of a child. For months I dismissed it, thinking it a film for children. Nothing could be further from the truth. No child should see this movie, it is far too violent.

The film is set in the Spain of Francisco Franco, late in World War II. An eight-year-old girl discovers a magical world in the Spanish countryside as the war around her becomes increasingly more horrifying. If you haven’t seen it, and you like the fantasy genre, treat yourself to this movie. The story is exquisite, the music haunting, and the cinematography brilliant. Have a box of Kleenex handy too. 🙂
