The editor of the Washington Post’s blog column, The Spider, asked me to write a short article about the recent corruption scandals plaguing Honduras. The process of editing something for print is very different from what I’m used to. After dozens of emailed suggestions and edits, the final version is completely different from the original.

It’s great to have an opinion published in a major US newspaper! They’re sending me “tear sheets” of the article, which will definitely end up on my wall for perusal by the next generation of Ortiz’s to come.

Congratulations, Aaron – that’s quite an accomplishment!

Bravo, Aaron!

Thanks Trish and Kman, it’s great isn’t it?

I’ll second the congratulations, Aaron.

But having seen the original article, I just have to say that the Washington Post did a real sanitation job, didn’t they?

It’s no wonder that most of the world does not know what is really going on in Honduras. It almost sounds like a defense of Chimirri. I guess fear of lawsuits and politics are the media’s major concern.

I was really disappointed that the article turned into nothing more than a link to the YouTube videos, which incidentally are 11, not 8. (Currently, although weren’t there 18 mentioned at one time? and even though Marcello has been charged with 12 counts of wiretapping) I’m wondering why they only mentioned 8?

This seems to be another example of the official media trying to capitalize on the blogging craze. But if they want to write the article, they should just do it and not pretend to be reporting on blogs.

Apparently, the international media needs proof, and proof comes from investigations and judicial proceedings, both of which are controlled by the corruptos, so it is a vicious circle in which the corruptos remain in control of the media.

Well, not to rain on your parade! It is a great honor for you and you deserve it!

Yes, it’s GREAT!

What an awesome credential.

Congrats, Aaron. Quite an accomplishment.

Hot stuff!

Congratulations Aaron!!! A published author in our midst.

Thanks Gringa,

Yes, the final version is very different, I think that happens a lot in the editorial process. The editor and I had a long back and forth email conversation until we arrived at the final copy. I didn’t haggle at all, but accepted all edits, and made suggestions.

I did mention to them about the 11 recordings. I think they count them as 8 because not all of them feature Chimirri or Mel. The Ministerio Publico cited 11 counts of revealing public secrets, before they retracted their claim.

Thanks Eduardo, Solana, and Tom!
