Poll Results, A Miserable Bunch?

December 16th, 2008

I was a bit surprised to see the poll results from Saturday’s “Happiness is Contagious” article. 24% of participants were very unhappy, scoring low in all 4 questions. The rest averaged 50%.

So please stop moping about and get out there. Enjoy yourself this week with whomever you like. Watch a comedy; get some belly laughs. Practice faith; it produces hope. Take some time to work on your self image: exercise, or dress better or simply smile a lot!

I heard a statistic (from a documentary called: “Consuming Children”)that claimed the number of advertisements a person sees during their lifetime is related to how depressed they are. The more adverstisements a person is exposed to, the more likely they are to be depressed….maybe the people who participated in the poll have been over-exposed to advertising…what do you think?

    Interesting, anon…

I think advertising is a central part of the postmodern consumer culture, an “ignorance is bliss” culture, in which worship has been replaced with advertising, and goal-oriented sacrifice with greedy self-indulgence.

Greed and gluttony only produce more hunger, and moral emptiness. Many have become listless wandering ghosts, clanking their chains of debt, lusting for more.

Generosity, on the other hand satisfies the soul, as do self-control, and freedom from the love of money. After all, the love of money is a root of all evil.
