Zelaya’s Doublespeak

Oscar Arias presented a new resolution, very similar to his earlier, seven point proposal this afternoon. He simply reworded his proposals, and reshuffled them. Delegations from interim government, and Manuel Zelaya attended a meeting where he read the proposal and answered, with visible anxiety, the questions of the Honduran press.

One of the questions was to ask President Arias, what guarantee he could give us that, should Manuel Rosales return to office, he will not press on with the constitutional assembly for indefinite reelection. He replied that this was one of the points of the accord he drafted. Zelaya’s delegation has claimed to accept that accord, more on that below.

Telesur’s live feed televised Zelaya delegate Rixi Moncada’s statements, but unfortunately cut off footage of Micheletti’s delegation mid-sentence. For the benefit of the doubt, this might have been a cutoff because of excess web traffic, but somehow I have trouble believing this.

Ms. Moncada’s statement was riddled with numerous lies. Amongst them came an interesting statement, the admission that Zelaya is behind the “National Front Against the Coup”, which she claimed was supported by most of the population, and the leaders of Honduras.

Zelaya has claimed to accept Arias’s plan since Saturday; and Telesur gleefully reported it. But, on that very day, he admitted to a Brazilian news source that he will press on with a constitutional assembly. Is he lying or does he believe two contradictory statements at once?

Worse, this very morning, the “National Front Against the Coup” was handing out flyers in Tegucigalpa in favor of a constitutional assembly. This is expressly forbidden by Saturday’s seven point Arias plan Ms. Moncada claimed Zelaya’s delegation has accepted five days ago. Doublespeak! Doublethink! How can we trust liars like these!
