On their return from a meeting with Costa Rican President Oscar Arias, four of the six candidates to the Honduran election reaffirmed their commitment with the electoral process. Arias had proposed that they accept Manuel Zelaya’s restitution, with a veiled threat that it was in their interest to start their presidency with an election that was recognized by the world.
These are Arias’s words:
“en la reunión pediré a los candidatos manifestar, después de este análisis, al señor Roberto Micheletti la importancia de restituir el orden constitucional, ya que ellos son los más interesados en esto, ya que de lo contrario también serán ignorados por el resto de la comunidad internacional”.
“in the meeting I will ask the candidates to manifest, after this analysis, to Mr. Roberto Micheletti, the importance of restoring constitutional order, since they are the ones most interested in this, since otherwise they too will be ignored by the rest of the international community.”
Independent candidate Carlos H. Reyes, rejected the invitation to the meeting because the Arias plan specifically excludes his platform, a Constituent Assembly to modify the constitution. Elvin Santos denounced that he has received death threats from Manuel Zelaya, and asked him to stop interfering in the election.
