Roberto Micheletti has condemned Brazil’s role (Google translation) in the return of Manuel Zelaya to Honduras and is asking them to turn the deposed President in to the authorities. He has guaranteed security for the premises and the people assembled there. There is, in my opinion, very little chance the Brazilians will even acknowledge this statement publicly.
Roberto Micheletti’s government has ordered an immediate curfew to “protect the lives of citizens and their goods”. The curfew will be in effect from 4pm Honduran time, to 7am tomorrow.
The story is confirmed. Manuel Zelaya has returned to Honduras, with the knowledge of the US State Department, and is currently in the Brazilian Embassy. Why now? I suppose it is because there is a meeting in the UN National assembly this week. By returning now, Zelaya is provoking Micheletti to arrest him, and be immediately condemned by the entire UN general assembly.
This is a very delicate game. The first move was to assemble his followers. I bet there will be bloodshed and victims for Zelaya to claim the government attacked them. The quickness with which the US State Department confirmed Zelaya’s presence suggest they knew of his plans. More data as it occurs.
Your prayers are greatly appreciated.
Manuel Zelaya has announced in Radio Globo, that he is currently in Honduras, and is being protected in the United Nations building in Tegucigalpa. He has said he will hold a press conference soon. Hugo Chavez backed his story, and Micheletti has denied this, saying that Zelaya is currently in a “quiet hotel suite in Managua.”
The pro-Zelaya media have rushed to confirm his statement (it occurred 20 minutes ago). And others merely say that the situation is unclear.
I cannot guess what he hopes to achieve except a distraction for something bigger. Who knows?
