What has been left of the past five months of fracas? Bitter division, and the resurrection of the cold war in Central America. Also greater skepticism and awareness of the people. Who is largely responsible for this? The leaders of the ALBA nations, and their ringmaster Hugo Chavez. Also, the media who have reported their lies as truth, either honestly, out of ignorance, or deceitfully, to further their agendas. But also responsible are the fearless voices that dared contradict the general opinion, risking their credibility and reputations. We shouldn’t lose what good may have come through this.

What good has come? Perhaps we are wiser and question what we are told more than before. People are speaking what they believe. Perhaps we are a bit more skeptical of flutists (pied pipers) from Hamelin, or Olancho, or Illinois or Venezuela, or Alaska for that matter. Seldom have the people even cared about our Constitution, let alone go on political protests. Certainly this was a first for me.

What bad has come out of this? The division of a once peaceful and friendly nation. I have very close friends who support Zelaya. We take care not to offend each other, because to us our brotherhood is more important than any politics. Before we could disagree peaceably, but now, we fear to broach the subject. I fear the wound will not heal in decades.

Let us fulfill our duty to our nation, and vote tomorrow out of love for it, those who can. Those who cannot, let’s pray for peace and for the truth to shine out. After rereading Zelaya’s words about fraud in Honduras, I tremble to think that he might not be far off the mark, because he didn’t merely say that he had commited fraud, but that everyone had committed fraud. Should we be unable to transparently elect a new government, who knows what suffering is in store for us.

But hope is there. Let’s pray, and let’s go out in faith. May the 2009 Honduran election signify the end of the madness and the return of peace.
