Freedom

These are lyrics that came to me this morning as I was struggling through the paradox of being a "slave to righteousness" versus a slave to sin. Being "slaves" of God is not true slavery, because when we submit to him, he sets us free to do much more than we could ever do without him. In contrast, the false freedom of leaving God aside, makes us unknowingly the slaves of our pride, and very obviously, of our physical desires.

I hope to set this to music sometime soon:

//Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom
All who sin are slaves to sin//

My emancipation, my liberty,
All my life I’ve struggled to be free;
Sin’s heavy iron shackles, your yoke I’ve lain aside,
Thinking I could somehow just be me

But when I try to be the person that I want to,
I end up losing all the things I treasure;
And when I try to be the person that you’d want me to be,
I find my striving worthless and in vain.

//Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom
All who sin are slaves to sin//

May I run in the freedom of your grace
May I see the lies that sin has me embrace
May I know that you hold me, only to let me go
And that living in your Spirit sets me free

//Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom
All who sin are slaves to sin//
