Google Earth is a wonderful time waster educational tool. Now we can enjoy 3d models of the buildings of ancient Rome in 320 AD. To see them you may need to download an update your version of Google Earth. Enjoy!

Pensieve Goes 3D

Google has anounced a new product named “Lively“, a 3D chatroom many have likened to Second Life. Three-D chatrooms have been around for a while, and while Second Life has become inmensely popular, how is Lively different?

Apparently Google wants to leverage it’s enormous user base and the ability to embed these chatrooms in webpages. The difference is that if enough people get a “Lively” avatar, they’ll be able to interact accross many web pages with a single user account.

The main problem is reaching a critical mass. On the plus side, furniture and accessories are free, and look pretty good. Also, creating a virtual world is addictive and fun for many (ask my Sims-addicted nephews and neices). A local installation is also necessary, WHY?

I doubt this will take off any time soon, but feel free to wander in the virtual Pensieve café. Capuccinnos are on the house.

I’m FINE, Really

The movie The Italian Job popularized the acronym FINE, which stands for:

  • Freaked out (in the PG version)
  • Insecure
  • Neurotic
  • Emotional

Curiosity sparked me to take a personality test (groan, not another!) because of persistent negative thoughts I’ve been having in the mornings. Once you get to Friday feeling like the week has been a long string of Mondays, you should, trust me.

Here are the results of taking the shortened version of the IPIP-NEO:

  • Extraverion: 2%
    • Friendliness (3%)
    • Gregariousness (14%)
    • Assertiveness (1%)
    • Activity level (98%)
    • Excitement-Seeking (10%)
    • Cheerfulness (0%)

Yes, you read it right; Cheerfulness is 0%!! But the next section is less of a downer.

  • Agreableness: 86%
    • Trust (42%)
    • Morality (81%)
    • Altruism (69%)
    • Cooperation (92%)
    • Modesty (wont’t tell)
    • Sympathy (72%)

Guess I could take over for the agreeable snowman (Watch Monsters Inc. if you didn’t catch that one). Oh and BTW, my modesty score is 82%, nothing overt.

  • Conscientiousness 48%
    • Self-efficacy (1%)
    • Orderliness (73%)
    • Dutifulness (88%)
    • Achievement Striving (46%)
    • Self-Discipline (oh it’s awful; another 0%)
    • Cautiousness (96%)

I’m beginning to have doubts about posting this, potential employers might be reading. But, of course, they’d be subjecting me to a psychometric test themselves before hiring me, so maybe it’s ok. Self-efficacy might be better described as “self-confidence”. At least it wasn’t a zero, like self-discipline!

  • Neuroticism 99%
    • Anxiety (99%)
    • Anger (8%)
    • Depression (99%)
    • Self-Consciousness (99%)
    • Immoderation (99%)
    • Vulnerability (99%)

Ok so here’s the problem, definitely. At least my anger score is low. but the rest are off the charts!

  • Openness to Experience 65%
    • Imagination (72%)
    • Artistic Interests (86%)
    • Emotionality (97%)
    • Adventurousness (19%)
    • Intellect (79%)
    • Liberalism (5%)

This is my redeeming virtue. I might be a neurotic freak, but also an artiste. I guess there is room for me in the world after all, even when Friday feels like Monday, and breathing like a waste of good oxygen.

I’m curious about your personalities, so if you feel up to the challenge, post your results in the comments section. That way we could all get to know each other better.

RSS readers have made me another mindless slave of surfing the web, only now I can visit hundreds of sites a day in less than 30 minutes. Huzzah!

Non-linear thinking

Look at the following puzzle from Best Pic Ever. If you notice, it seems that the first triangle takes up 1 square unit less space than the bottom one. This one had me so stumped I emailed a college professor of mine with a doctorate in higher mathematics (topology), and the answer he gave me was so simple I wanted to kick myself.

I’ll give you a hint: the answer is nonlinear.

Google Earth Easter Egg

Load up Google Earth, press CTRL + ALT + A and you get a flight simulator!!!! Here’s the controls page.

What an awesome toy!!!! It was fun flying an F16 over Kilimanjaro, New York City, Lake Tahoe, Roatan, and retracing the path of the plane that brought me to Tegucigalpa yesterday. I took a detour to the hydroelectric dam at El Cajón, but crashed near Tegucigalpa airport. Man, the approach to Tegucigalpa airport is deadly!!

Here are some screen shots:

A major thanks to Alcanjo for blogging about this!!

Surreal Roots

From the culture that gave us Don Quixote, the running of the bulls at Pamplona, and the Burial of the Sardine, comes the greatest food fight to stain the façade of history, La Tomatina.

Enjoy.
